PIEMONTE (PIEDMONT): OSSOLA: VALLE ANZASCA: MACUGNAGA

Miniera d'Oro della Guia (Gold Mine)

Open: from 1 June to 15 September. 09.00-11.30 and 14.00-17.30 daily.

First mined in 1710, the Guia Gold Mine is situated in Borca di Macugnaga and is the first gold mine in the Alps open to tourist excursions and educational visits. It also has Italy's first mine museum.

There is 1.3km mine, flat and level for easy walking and fully lit. There is access for disabled persons and children.

Visitors can experience the history of the laborious work carried out by the miners since the 1700s and right up until 1961. See how mining techniques and equipment have evolved through the years. It is also an opportunity to explore the natural formations deep inside a number of galleries in one of the most interesting mountains in the Alps.

The mine is open for tourists during the peak season but is available all year round for groups by prior arrangement. There is also the possibility for groups to have an organised "Giornata dell'oro" (Gold day).
